About the Project
The multi-phase modernization of the MEM aging terminal facilities will:
Allow MEM to meet future demand and serve the Region with a world-class facility for decades to come
Bring all facilities up to current seismic resiliency standards
Improve the traveler experience through a modernized, ADA-comfortable, and operationally flexible facility
Preserve the character of the existing terminal architecture
Minimize MEM’s impact on the environment and support a clean energy future
Promote efficiency and competition through common-use facilities
Improve job opportunities for underserved communities
Phase 1
Modernize and consolidate all gate operations onto one concourse
The modernized concourse will be seismically resilient and feature common-use equipment, more natural light, more room to move, new retail and restaurant options, and new amenities to enhance the passenger experience.
The TMSP project will seismically protect the existing terminal, while maintaining the architectural character, including:
Expand the face of the building
Reconfigure vertical circulation
Reconfigure the ticket lobby
Construct a modern Central Baggage Inspection System (CBIS)
Expand and modernize Security Screening Checkpoints
Expand bag claim
The upper-level upgrades will:
Expand building to the north into the roadway to garner more space in terminal
Move vertical circulation to face of building
Create a single security checkpoint versus two (expanded queue zone)
Shift ticket counters to A and C sides of lobby
Open up area under mezzanines
Create opportunity for remote bag drop and self-ticketing areas on either side of security
Create a single exit from concourse to bag claim/ticket lobby
The lower-level upgrades will:
Expand baggage claim with two new carousels
Feature a Central Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) on A side
Enhance bag make-up
Create an Employee Screening Checkpoint
Preserve C side for future FIS
Allow FIS bag belt to be used for domestic operations (swing belt)
